Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris born October 20th 1964) is an American politician and lawyer who is the 49th and current vice president of the United States. She is the first female vice president and the highest-ranking female politician in U.S. history, as being the first African American and first Asian American vice president. Being a part of the Democratic Party, she was the attorney general of California in 2011-2017 and a United States senator representing California from 2017 to 2021. Harris was born in Oakland, California. She graduated from Howard University as well as the University of California Hastings College of the Law. Harris began her career at the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Then, she was recruited to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2003 she was elected San Francisco District Attorney. Harris was elected Attorney General of California in 2010 and was reelected in 2014. Between 2017 and 2021, Harris was the junior United States senator for California. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez to become the 2nd African American woman senator and the first South Asian American ever to be elected to the United States Senate. As senator, she was a vocal advocate for reforms to healthcare as well as federal de-scheduling cannabis, a pathway to citizenship for immigrants who are not legal and the DREAM Act, a ban of assault weapons and progressive tax reform. Her sharp questioning of Trump officials in Senate hearings earned the attention of the nation, which included the second Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh who was indicted with sexual assault.
